Michael Brooks Biography

He is self taught and started painting after graduating from UWI in 1988 with a B.Sc. (Physics). He entered the annual Jamaica Festival Fine Arts competition in 1992 and 1993 and was awarded the silver and gold medals respectively. While developing his painting skills, he also studied computer graphics. That became his primary profession until 2008, when he started devoting more time to painting. He has participated in numerous solo and joint exhibitions in Jamaica .

He began painting by teaching himself to use watercolours. After a few years of painting exclusively in watercolour he moved to acrylic on canvas. He can work with a variety of media but he mostly uses acrylics. His natural inclination has always been toward detail and realism. Most of his paintings have been Jamaican landscapes, but he has also done many portraits and detailed still life work.

In 2013 he came across an art competition which was advertised online by the Des Moines , Iowa Classic Car Concours. They invited submissions in keeping with their theme. He decided to enter and subsequently won the top award. This was his first classic automotive painting.
